Construction of the Power Marine

Builders of TheHome of the 21 Sport Cat

From start to finish the emphises is on Quality and Performance.

The finest in GRP materials have been chosen from around the world to produce the hull, deck and fiberglass parts of the 21 SportCat.

Followed by the aquision of the highest quality instrimintation and interior finishings available, to bring to you the finest product possible.

We start with a highly polished mould and mask off the designs to each customers own specification, we then apply a double layer of gelcoat in the specified colours chosen for that particular boat.

After all the colours of the gelcoat have been applied we start the laminate by skin coating the entire boat with a layer of chopped strand mat, this layer ensures a good gelcoat to laminate bond and greatly reduces the affect of fabric print through on the finished exterior gelcoat.

The following laminate consists of strategically placed layers of 1208 & 1708 Bi-Directional stitchmat.

Stitchmat is a type of glass fiber cloth that is not woven, instead the strands are laid down on top of one and other and stitched together with a light yarn. This reduces large gaps full of brittle resin and crimped fibres usually associated with other woven cloth styles, such as the more commonly used woven roving. The use of stitchmat produces a lighter weight and stronger boat.

We have chosen Michigan Composites high density foam core for the sponson running surfaces and Plascore polypropylene honeycomb for the tunnel top, hull sides, bulkheads and transom knees. All main bulkheads, sponson bulkheads and knees are pattern cut from Plascore honeycomb core panels and padded to external hull surfaces to ensure structural integrity during even the hardest of landings.

The transom; a topic of much debate in performance boating circles.

Each 21 SportCat is built with the option of single or twin outboard application as standard, so we believe the transom and its supporting structures MUST be up to the task. That is why we have chosen to use high quality Gaboon BS1088 marine plywood for the transom core. Modern high density foams, while they don't rot, they exhibit some properties that are unfavorable to transom application such as compression and fatigue, either which could result in transom failure. We believe that high quality MARINE grade plywood, carefully installed and laminated is the only way to build a strong transom to last, that has proven results over time.

After the hull has been laid up and all of the structural pieces have been installed we install the two fuel tanks into their location in each of the sponsons which are then bolted into place on solid mounts. At this point any wiring passages are also placed, before the floor liner is installed.

The floor liner is then carefully situated into the boat and glassed around the entire perimeter, completing the hull's structure. The hull is now ready to accept it's newly completed deck.

The deck on each 21 is laminated using 1208 and 1708 bi-directional stitchmat throughout and is cored with end grain balsa core, this deck is then placed on the hull and the entire perimeter of the hull to deck joint is fully bonded inside the boat and finished on the exterior with a high quality rub-rail. This method effectively produces a single piece boat of superior strength.

If it's an ultra light boat or race boat you are after, talk to us about custom laminates, we can build our boats from any FRP laminate you specify, any resin system or we can work with you to design a laminate that will work for your particular requirements.* Please call or e-mail us to inquire about special laminates.
